Each different title means something unique in terms of professional education, skills, and primary job functions. This can be quite confusing for patients and retail consumers, so here at Eye Doc of Boca we have assembled a short definition on the role of the all-important optician to clarify things for you! A Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO) is a person who prepares or duplicates a prescription for eyeglasses from one of our board certified optometrists. The eye doctor can measure adapt and adjust those eyeglasses to fit the face for the aid of vision to the human eye. Contact lenses can also be fit, but only with a written prescription from one an optometrist. The LDO must have a minimum of a 2 year degree in Opticianry or a 6,000 hour apprenticeship education. This allows the LDO candidate to sit for a state licensing examination. A LDO fills what your eye doctor requires. It could be as simple as a pair of reading glasses or as complex as a special contact lens for a damaged eye.
