Eye exams should be done annually (once a year) to ensure healthy eyesight. We’ve noticed that many people wonder what’s the best time for an eye exam. It’s an important procedure and you should be prepared for it. Having your eyes examined for cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases is a part of maintaining your overall health and wellness. Once you’ve decided you should have your eye exam done, what’s the best time? Optometrists understand that the eyes are not static organs in our bodies, so some times are better than others to conduct an effective eye exam.
Preparing for Eye Exams
The eye muscles change flexibility throughout the day and week, and this makes a difference on the result of your eye exam. For example, an eye doctor can give you a precise prescription one day, but if the eyes were re-examined a few days later, this prescription could slightly change.
The goal of an eye exam is not to give a patient the strongest prescription because this actually accelerates vision deterioration. The lenses you receive, on average, should put your visual acuity at 20/30, instead of 20/20 which is the standard bearer for normal clarity and sharpness of vision. This way, your need for a stronger prescription down the line will be minimized.
Scheduling Your Eye Exam
If you have a regular work schedule with weekends off, we recommend scheduling your eye exam for a Monday morning. This is because you’ve coming off a weekend so your eyes will be more relaxed and rested. You most likely have spent less time on the computer over the weekend. In addition, your eye pressure is stable in the morning so that’s the best time of the day to do it. Ultimately, as long as you are in good health and feel vigorous, then taking the eye exam at your most convenient time should not cause any issues.
